I remember exactly when the urge of living in an Arab country started kicking inside of me.
I was having Moroccan Tea in some rooftop in Jeema El Fna, Marrakech, as I hear the Call to Prayer for the first time. Suddenly I got chills all over me.
I’ve always been intrigued, curious, fascinated about Arab and Islamic Culture, their music, their writing, their language, their habits.
Sadly these countries and their people have been underrated specially due to the so called “terrorist attacks” where unfortunately some tend to see them all as birds of a feather, having distorted perceptions about Islamic religion and culture, mainly due to the western Media trying to shape our minds.
Why the hell do we all should believe the same? Why do we all should act the same, dress the same? That's exactly the magic of different cultures, isn't it? No cultures globalisation, please. But no doubt Humans are awakening and finally, I believe we are starting to see a change here.
So basically that’s when I decided I should just go for it and Dubai came out to be the right choice.
Ended up living some of the best moments there. Worked in outstanding Hotel properties surrounded by amazing people from all over the World, learned and grew more than ever in my life.
I learned specially about People, I grew mostly when it comes to Emotional Intelligence.
I found out Arabs aren’t harsh, I found out that Germans and Russian are not that cold.
I saw the other side of the coin.
It’s just true that you have to see with your own eyes before you label, before you judge.
Coming back to your country after living for a while somewhere else around this Globe has always a bitter sweet taste in it.
As I was living in Dubai, I felt the friendship relations I nurtured there felt 100 times stronger than some of my 10 or 20 year friendships back in Portugal.
There’s my second family on the other side. My Lebanese, Syrian and Russian sisters, my Egyptian, Jordanian, Kenyan and German Brothers, my Italian, French and Turkish cousins.
I made friends for life and those are the hardest to leave behind. I discovered not only how much we can learn from our differences but also how similar we all are in the end.
I seriously miss having Hummus, drinking avocado juice and smoking shisha while having endless conversations till 3AM at some restaurant terrace with 10 other people from different Nationalities all gathered in the same place at the same time from completely different backgrounds with 1000 stories to tell.
I miss making endless questions to my friends to find out more about their life experiences and their hometowns.
I miss just listening to them.
I miss saying “Khalas”, “Yalla”, “Mabrook”, “La-a”, and so on and everyone understanding the point.
Sometimes I think “If only I could gather everyone and everything that I love in just one place…”, but I guess that’s exactly the magic of this incredible World we are living in. Having a bit of everything we love spread around the Globe to make us move, travel and allow us entering in these richfull journeys.
